10 Slasher Movies to Watch If You Like ‘Scream’

Scream is my favorite horror movie of all time. It blends 2 of my favorite horror subgenres, slasher and whodunit, with satire and humor. Throw in a super talented cast and late 90s nostalgia, along with some awesome kills, and to me it makes up the perfect modern horror classic.

Every now and then I like to re-watch the movie, and then i’ll go looking for similar movies as well, and over years I’ve developed a few favorites that I love to recommend. So I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite slasher moves that you should definitely watch if you love Scream.

Of course I first have to recommend that you watch or re-watch all of the Scream movies in the franchise – currently there are 6. Another franchise movie is also coming soon!

1. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

Director: Jim Gillespie
Starring: Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Freddie Prinze Jr.

If you’re obsessed with Scream, I can think of no better slasher movie recommendation for you than I Know What You Did Last Summer. It’s about a group of friends accidentally hits a man with their car and decides to cover up the incident. A year later, they start receiving ominous messages from someone who seems to know their deadly secret. As the body count rises, the group realizes that someone is out for revenge. You should also watch the sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which is just as fun as the original.

2. Urban Legend (1998)

Director: Jamie Blanks
Starring: Alicia Witt, Jared Leto, Rebecca Gayheart, Joshua Jackson

On a college campus, a series of murders takes place, all resembling popular urban legends. A group of students tries to unravel the mystery, only to find themselves being stalked by a masked killer.

3. Cherry Falls (1999)

Director: Geoffrey Wright
Starring: Brittany Murphy, Jay Mohr, Michael Biehn

In the small town of Cherry Falls, a serial killer targets virgins, forcing the local high school students to reconsider their moral decisions. As the town’s secret is slowly uncovered, the hunt for the killer grows more frantic.

4. Thanksgiving (2023)

Director: Eli Roth
Starring: Patrick Dempsey, Addison Rae, Milo Manheim

This holiday-themed slasher sees a town’s Thanksgiving celebration turned into a bloody nightmare when a killer dressed as a pilgrim begins terrorizing residents

5. Happy Death Day (2017)

Director: Christopher Landon
Starring: Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard, Ruby Modine

A college student named Tree Gelbman relives the day of her murder over and over, trapped in a time loop until she can figure out the identity of her killer.

6. Halloween (1978)

Director: John Carpenter
Starring: Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Pleasence, P.J. Soles

Of course I have to recommend one of the top slasher films of all time: Halloween. On Halloween night, Michael Myers escapes from a mental institution and returns to his hometown to stalk babysitters, including Laurie Strode.

7. Friday the 13th (1980)

Director: Sean S. Cunningham
Starring: Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King, Kevin Bacon

Another slasher classic you must watch: Friday the 13th. At Camp Crystal Lake, a group of young counselors is stalked by an unknown killer. As they are murdered one by one, the bloody mystery surrounding the camp’s tragic past slowly unravels.

8. Fear Street 1994 (2021)

Director: Leigh Janiak
Starring: Kiana Madeira, Olivia Scott Welch, Benjamin Flores Jr.

This newer slasher film has the 90’s nostalgia that reminds me so much of Scream. Set in the cursed town of Shadyside, a group of teenagers faces off against a killer linked to an ancient evil. There are also 2 other movies in the series, and I recommend watching them to complete the story.

9. Sick (2022)

Director: John Hyams
Starring: Gideon Adlon, Bethlehem Million, Dylan Sprayberry

During the pandemic, two friends isolate themselves in a remote lake house, only to be hunted by a masked killer.

10. Initiation (2020)

Director: John Berardo
Starring: Lindsay LaVanchy, Lochlyn Munro, Isabella Gomez

I’m adding in one of my personal favorite college slashers from the 2020’s. At a college campus, the brutal murder of a student sends shockwaves through the school, uncovering a web of secrets involving hazing and social media scandals. As more bodies pile up, the race to uncover the killer’s identity becomes a deadly game.
